Pediatric Radiology

A specialist in pediatric radiology uses imaging and interventional procedures related to the diagnosis, care, and management of congenital abnormalities (those present at birth) and diseases particular to infants and children. A pediatric radiologist also treats diseases that begin in childhood and can cause impairments in adulthood.

Pediatric imaging is a subspecialty of diagnostic imaging which recognizes the truth of the adage that “children are not small adults.” The evaluation of the unique diseases of childhood and the emotional needs of the pediatric patient differ significantly from the adult patient, and our pediatric imaging specialists are trained to optimally manage these differences. The technologists in our hospitals and offices have also been specially trained by our pediatric radiology specialists, so that superior images can be obtained with the least amount of discomfort and anxiety for your infant or child.

Pediatric radiologists commonly diagnose or treat the following conditions:

  • Cancer diagnosis and staging
  • Cancer treatment monitoring
  • Congenital hip dysplasia
  • Diagnosis and monitoring of infections and inflammatory disorders
  • Evaluation of individual organs and bones
  • Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis
  • Trauma injuries
  • Tumors or birth defects

Pediatric radiology exams and procedures include:

  • Chest x-ray
  • Computerized tomography (CT) of the brain, sinuses, chest, abdomen, and pelvis
  • Gastrointestinal examination including the esophagus, stomach and intestines
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the nervous system, skeleton and viscera
  • Scoliosis evaluation
  • Ultrasound examination of the head, neck, abdomen and pelvis
  • Voiding cystourethrogram
  • X-ray evaluation of skeletal and joint trauma and congenital malformations
